Local commissioners and providers of healthcare have a responsibility to enable the guideline to be applied when individual professionals and people using services wish to use it. They should do so in the context of local and national priorities for funding and developing services, and in light of their duties to have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, to advance equality of opportunity and to reduce health inequalities. Nothing in this guideline should be interpreted in a way that would be inconsistent with complying with those duties.

In the 1988 Seoul Games, the Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson won the 100-meter race, and also set a world record in the same. But later in a drug test, he was found to have taken steroids in order to win the race. Though he said he had used the steroids only during training, and only because he wanted to keep up with his opponents, he was disqualified from the race. He was also stripped of his medal as well as his world record honors, and the medal was given to the second place holder – Carl Lewis. He also admitted later that he had used steroids when he made a world record in 1987. This resulted in his previous record being taken away from him as well.

The article stated “Now, 50,000/day is a pharmacological dose, which simply means the vitamin D is being used as a drug and not as a supplement for good health.”
Thank you for this definition! I have been wondering for some time why the two terms were used, seemingly interchangeably. Now I know the difference. I have used 50,000 to 100,000/day dosages on many occasions for a period of 3-5 days when exposed to a situation that might have proven to be ‘infectious’. Even during the summer, I take an occasional ‘booster dosage’ as I do not get to spend a lot of time in the sun. My 25 OHD tests always come back in the 100-125 range, which used to ‘freak out’ my doctor. I still believe that one day this range will be considered the optimal range for cancer and other disease prevention. I believe the 60 to 80 ng/ml range will prove to be over time, as significantly too low, considering the continual onslaught against our health that occurs in our modern day living from so many sources. This is not meant as medical or nutritional advice, but only as a description of the choices I have made concerning my Vitamin D supplementation. As a side note, my liver tests are always within normal ranges.

In addition to the mentioned side effects several others have been reported. In both males and females acne are frequently reported, as well as hypertrophy of sebaceous glands, increased tallow excretion, hair loss, and alopecia. There is some evidence that anabolic steroid abuse may affect the immune system, leading to a decreased effectiveness of the defense system. Steroid use decreases the glucose tolerance, while there is an increase in insulin resistance. These changes mimic Type II diabetes. These changes seem to be reversible after abstention from the drugs.

An acute myopathy has been observed with the use of high doses of corticosteroids, most often occurring in patients with disorders of neuromuscular transmission (., myasthenia gravis ), or in patients receiving concomitant therapy with neuromuscular blocking drugs (., pancuronium). This acute myopathy is generalized, may involve ocular and respiratory muscles, and may result in quadriparesis . Elevations of creatine kinase may occur. Clinical improvement or recovery after stopping corticosteroids may require weeks to years.
