Steroid injection in hip aftercare

I too am in the same stage as you - I am off to see two hip surgeons on the 7th and 8th Dec to take their advice (8th is a second opinion and he is a research surgeon). I dont think this steroid is going to last at all, and my surgeon did say they don't always work if that gives you any comfort, and I too share your worries and am glued to all of these discussions!  I know with my own scan the MRI didn't show the osteoarthritis but my Xray did (and this is common apparently) - I have some tasty osteocytes . spurs etc - have you had this done? I had friends winding me up about the steroid not working as much as I had hoped but draw comfort from my scan (and my 1st surgeon's comments) if that is of help.

I have a torn meniscus , and arthritis in my knee so I had a cortisone injection yesterday, the 27 of July. The injection site was sore, but not anything I couldn't handle. I did however have a headache all night, couldn't sleep, and my blood pressure was high. I take medicines for high blood pressure , but it didn't help much. I felt achy all over, and had hot flashes so bad that I had to have a fan blowing directly on me all night. Today I feel somewhat better. Knee isn't as sore, blood pressure is ok, and I am not as hot as I was last night. I did take a nap today, and felt like eating. Headache is slight, and less pain in my knee. Not sure if I will have another shot or not because of the side effects, but depends on how much I can endure with the pain in my knee.

Cortisone injections are extremely safe, but they do still have potential problems. If you are concerned about having a cortisone shot, talk with your doctor. While cortisone is a powerful treatment for many orthopedic conditions, there are usually other options that can also be tried. Many doctors will offer an injection as they are quick, easy, and most often effective. However, your doctor should also be able to offer other treatments for inflammation that may also be effective for those that cannot have, or don't want, a cortisone injection.
