Mitochondrial derived peptides as novel regulators of metabolism
Su-Jeong Kim             J Physiol 2017

Mitochondrial derived peptides represent a new class of circulating signalling molecules. Humanin, the first member of this class, has been shown to have several metabolic effects such as reducing weight gain and visceral fat and increasing glucose stimulated insulin release. The discovery of several other new members such as MOTS-c and SHLP1-6, have further added to this group. These new peptides have also been found to affect metabolism with MOTS-c potently decreasing weight gain in mice on a high fat diet . In this review, we will cover the basic biology of this class of peptides and discuss the relevance to organismal metabolism.

Frequent use of any multivitamins was not associated with risk of diabetes after adjustment for potential confounders and uses of individual supplements. Compared with nonusers of any multivitamins, the multivariate ORs among users were (95% CI –) for taking vitamins less than once per week, (–) for one to three times per week, (–) for four to six times per week, and (–) for seven or more times per week (P for trend = ). Significantly lower risk of diabetes was associated with the use of vitamin C or calcium supplements. The multivariate ORs comparing daily users with nonusers were (–) for vitamin C supplements and (–) for calcium supplements. Use of vitamin E or other individual vitamin and mineral supplements were not associated with diabetes risk.

CONCLUSIONS: These finding suggest that foam rolling of the quadriceps musculature may have an acute effect on the PPT of the ipsilateral hamstrings and contralateral quadriceps muscles. Individual may feel less discomfort due to a higher PPT. The ipsilateral decrease in hamstring PPT may have occurred through reciprocal inhibition and agonist pain perception from rolling on the left quadriceps. The cross-over effect of decreased right quadriceps PPT may have been from a more global neurophysiological response. Clinicians must consider these results to be exploratory and future investigations examining this intervention on PPT is warranted.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 529 healthcare professionals (nursing staff, 80% female, mean age: 40 years), supplementation with an encapsulated juice powder concentrate (4 capsules) for a period of 8 months was found to be associated with a 20% reduction in moderate or severe common cold symptom days. Subjects who received the supplementation had a mean days of moderate or severe common cold symptoms, as compared to days in the placebo group. The authors conclude, “Intake of a dietary supplement from fruits and vegetables was associated with a 20 % reduction of moderate or severe common cold symptom days in healthcare professionals particularly exposed to patient contact.”
